Courses
I teach Creative Writing in Howard University's undergraduate English Department. Take a look at the course descriptions below for information about my upcoming offerings.

ENGL 139-01
Creative Writing: Nonfiction II
Tues/Thurs 11:10-12:30 - An intermediate course that builds on the foundations learned at the introductory level and delves into specific aspects of contemporary craft through focused reading and writing. This course centers one of creative nonfiction's most popular and growing forms: memoir. Through intense study, our goal will be to learn how to utilize such craft elements as character, structure, research, and reporting to tell personal stories of societal significance and to give voice to the voiceless. Students will interact with authors, and compose and workshop their own memoir pieces, expanding their knowledge of craft, composition, consistent writing practices, constructive criticism, and revision in order to become effective contemporary creative nonfiction writers. Open to ENGLISH majors.
ENGL 295-02
Creative Writing Workshop
Tues/Thurs 12:40-2 - An advanced course that develops the student’s creative writing abilities through interrogation and practice of craft elements in a multi-genre workshop setting. Portfolio submission required. Prerequisite: Completion of ENGL 127 with "C" or higher. Required for English Majors with Creative Writing concentration; Satisfies an English Major/Minor elective.

ENGL 386-01
Creative Writing: Lyric Essay
This elective is meant to offer students an opportunity to learn about and practice writing in the creative nonfiction genre. Using the workshop format students will focus on the lyric essay, an experimental form of personal essay that offers an opportunity to write nonfiction through alternative structures. We will learn about why and how nonfiction writers break free from traditional prose and what effect being unbound has on both truth and story. Students will study lyric forms such as braided, collage, mosaic, and hermit crab essays and write and workshop several of their own. Students will be exposed to some of the most contemporary innovations within the genre. Open to ALL majors.
